BIRMINGHAM, AL – Three South Dakotans competed in the United States Golf Association Men's State Team Championship this week at Country Club of Birmingham. The team was comprised of Jesse Talcott of Harrisburg, Julean Michels of Sioux Falls, and Michael Keeton of Pierre.
The team finished the tournament at +27, missing the two-day cut by 14 strokes.
After Wednesday, day one of the championship, South Dakota was tied for 41st place with a score of 155 in the 52-team field of all 50 states plus District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Team scores are calculated by adding the best two of the three scores from the team.
Talcott led the team with an opening-round 75. Keeton shot an 80. Michels round of 84 did not count on day one.
On Thursday, Keeton led South Dakota with a 76. Michels added the second score of 80. Talcott birdied his first hole of the day but slipped as the round progressed to finish with an 84.
Through two days, South Dakota's tournament total was 27-over par, or 311 (155-156).

Julean Michels started his time in Alabama with some excitement - an ace.

Jesse Talcott (Harrisburg, SD) - Finished 2nd in the 2016 SDGA Match Play Championship, 3rd in the 2016 SDGA Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, tied for 3rd in the 2016 SDGA Two-Man Championship, and tied for 5th in the 2016 SDGA Men's Amateur Championship.
Julean Michels (Sioux Falls, SD) - Finished 2nd in the 2016 SDGA Two-Man Championship and made the 2016 SDGA Match Play Championship final four.
Michael Keeton (Pierre, SD) - Won the 2016 SDGA Men's Mid-Amateur Championship and 2016 SDGA Match Play Championship.
